First
Sound of Autumn
In the middle of September,
gazing in the woods
at the vibrant green leaves of summer,
a faint whisper falls softly upon my ear.
I look around and there it is,
ever before me though it seems so unreal.
Having been gone for an annual length of time;
I hear its faint footsteps of return, as they near.
I stare to make sure its return is true.
Has time really faded so quickly?
I reflect on the time and the moments that have passed,
and recount the gifts from God that I hold so dear.
Again the whisper calls to me, bringing me from
my reflections of the past to the reality of the present.
Seeing one tree’s leaves faintly, ever so faintly fading,
I’ve heard the First Sound of Autumn this year.
