My Cat Won't Let Me Hold It or Pet It.

Cats by nature are NOT social animals. They do NOT hang in packs, like dogs do. They choose to live in solitaire.

Once you understand that, then you'll understand, when a cat DOES let you pet it or hold it - it truly is a gift of honor.

So, is there no hope for you? Definitely not! The Cat doesn't let you hold it or pet it, because that is exactly what YOU want to do, and not give the Cat the space he desires. So, he now has a fear of you making these demands and he quickly tries to escape.

Give the Cat that space - that is, feed it, talk to it, and coo it - WITHOUT touching the cat at all. After about a week (it could take longer - be patient the rewards are priceless), the Cat will figure out, you're not demanding to hold it or touch it, and you'll discover the Cat is now following you around from room to room. He doesn't fear being in your company now, because he no longer fears you making demands of him of which he is uncomfortable.

Now, keep giving this space, and soon, you'll notice Kitty rubbing up against your legs, (the Cat is now touching you!!), or he'll sit beside you or he may even dare to get into your lap! Kitty now is so comfortable around you, he has developed a deeper trust in you, that he is comfortable to pet you now. When he shows you this comfort, pet him - just a little bit. Don't demand to hold it.

As your bond grows - always offer your hand to Kitty first. If he responds, by touching your hand with his mouth, (usually he rubs his face against it, marking his scent upon you - he owns you, remember?), then it's okay to pet him. If you always ask Kitty first to pet him in this way, he most likely will always oblige!

Now, some kitties, are very lovey - but absolutely detest being held. Don't hold that kitty. That just frustrates your relationship. I have one like this. She sleeps with me, on my legs, gets in my lap, gets under the cover and often sleeps on my stomach or (my butt, if I sleeping on my stomach) - but she cannot stand being held. So, I enjoy all the company she will allow me, and I do not hold her. We are the best of buddies.

Cats are like people - we all have our own unique personalities. Some people like to hug more than others. You know you don't hug the person, who takes offense to this - so don't hold the Cat who takes offense to this!
