Not all Cats are born knowing how to use the litter box, (contrary
to popular belief)- but most are born with the instinct to do their
business in one particular place. Chances are you have observed your
kitten using one particular place already. Take advantage of that!
Kittens by nature are small, (part of what makes them so cute!) - so
a full size litter box is not needed right now, during this spot
training - but do have one right now for overall training. What is
this spot training? Locate your kitten's chosen spot where she does
her business, and use a small rectangular aluminum pan, (you can
find them very cheap at your local grocery store) and fill it with
the litter and place that new litter pan right on that spot. This
will teach your kitten to do her business in a litter pan. Most of
the time chosen spots like this will be in a corner or behind
something. Cats seem to like privacy (kind of like us!).
Now, place your kitten's food bowl next to the litter pan, where you
want your kitten to ultimately use the litter box. The kitten will
quickly learn where her food is, and will connect that place as hers
and will begin associating the litter box as part of her space. Soon
she'll connect the litter smell and feel that she is using in her
chosen spot to do her business, is the same as the litter box next
to her food's - and she'll associate that as another place to do her
business. As soon as you catch her doing her business there - you
can remove the spot training litter pan. It may take time, but
don't worry, she'll catch on!
But Seqkat - I don't want her food next to her litter box.
No problem. Once your kitten is fully litter box trained, you can
move her food, and she'll continue to do her business in her
*litter
box.

*Speaking
of kitty litters - Seqkat's purr-sonal recommendation would be the
wood pelleted litters. They are the best. As the pellets
get wet, they turn to a very soft saw dust. You only scoop the
poop. When the litter is full of saw dust, it's time to empty
it completely - (and discover the bottom of your litter box is
DRY!!), and pour in some new. This is the best kitty litter on
odor as well. And this litter is biodegradable - you can use
it as mulch!
You can purchase
it right here at PETsMART!
